Freelancer Fuel: Food And Drink Freelancers Should Avoid

After years of working as a freelancer, I noticed that while working, I usually end up getting the munchies. While a snack attack can help give you the energy to power through work, not all snacks are beneficial. There are some snacks that are better left as a reward for finishing your work rather than in between assignments and projects. Here are a few:

Artificial Sugary Foods

It’s often very tempting to build up a sugar rush to help you cruise through a particularly tough assignment. When I started out, I’d usually have a bag of jellybeans with me. The problem with these sugar rushes, however, is the inevitable crash that comes after, leaving you sluggish and unproductive. Rather than candies, consider fruits, either dried or fresh for that boost.

Oily And Fatty Food

Sometimes, it’s tempting to plop a plate of deep-fried goodies next to you while you work, rewarding yourself with a bite every full paragraph or two that you complete. Unfortunately, it’s oil and fat that are most likely to send you off into the blissful embrace of a “food coma”.  The early signs of a food coma are likely to make you look for caffeine or sugar to counteract it, which would work if they didn’t make you crash after!

Food With Flavor Coating

Chips, flavored fries and popcorn, donuts: most have a coating of flavoring or powdered sugar. These can end up on your fingers and if you’re they type who eats and works at the same time, you run the risk of getting that powder on and worse, IN your laptop. Believe it or not, there have been documented cases where laptops have been infested with ants and even baby roaches! Not ideal for working at all!

Building A Better Workplace: Home Improvement For Work From Home Freelancers

A well maintained, functional workplace makes for happy workers. The same goes for freelancers who work from home; a well maintained, well cared for home will make happy freelancers. This means home improvements that are specific to our type of work are particularly important to makes sure that we can reach maximum productivity. Here are some improvements I’ve done around my home:

Easy To Reach Wall-Mounted Extension Cords

Most extension cords come with a way to mount them on the walls. Since I tend to move around my house while I work, waiting for things to upload, dealing with conference calls, etc., having easy access sockets means that I can move around without having to worry about reaching behind furniture. This also works for when we have face-to-face conferences for the core blog team at my home!

Invest In Good Blinds

Depending on the time of day you work, controlling the amount of light that gets into your home is important. For a night owl like me, sleeping happens during the day. Now, sleeping when the sun is up can lead to your sleep not being as restful so a dark house is a good one. For people who work during the day, good blinds can help you keep the heat out (or in depending on the season) as well!

Invest In Your Work Area

Since your work area is where you’ll be spending most of your day, investing in the area will pay off in the long run. If you work at a desk, invest in a good chair. If you work on the floor, a good cushion or carpeting will go a long way. If you work on the bed, nice solid pillows to prop you up while you work will save you from the pain of an aching back.

Waking Up At The Office: Turning Your Bed Into A Workspace

One of the things I love most about working as a freelancer is waking up and knowing I don’t have to worry about commuting, having to deal with nightmare co-workers, or pretty much any of the usual office related nightmares. In fact, I’m in the office as soon as I wake up!

One of the questions I often get, however, is “How do you work from your bed? Isn’t a desk better?” To answer the questions posed: A desk IS better if you like having to try and figure out how to stay in a chair for hours without your butt dying; and here’s how I work from my bed:

Invest In A Bed Tray

Bed trays are great. Originally conceived so people could eat in bed while watching TV, recent designs are also geared towards laptop users. You don’t need anything fancy; a solid surface that allows for enough space for your laptop is usually enough. If you’re the type who uses a stylus or a mouse, you may want to get a larger bed tray. Personally, I have a separate tray for my mouse and peripherals.

Water Bottles / Spillproof Drink Containers Are A Must

Non-spill drink containers are going to save you a LOT of trouble in the long run. Even when working on a surface like a desk or table, drink-related accidents happen. While these spills are easy enough to deal with on those surfaces, spilling your drink on your bed (or your laptop) isn’t as easy to deal with. Investing in a spillproof container will make sure you’ll never have to!

Don’t Eat In Bed

As tempting as it sounds, eating in bed can be a very bad idea. While you can prevent spills with spillproof cups, it’s a lot harder to prevent food messes. Even a simple sandwich risks getting crumbs all over the bed and crumbs in bed are never a good thing! When you’re going to have a snack or a meal, always do so away from the bed! Personally, I eat on the floor at the foot of the bed so I can watch some TV.
